Canadian:US Daytime Running Lamps 900 1992

Hard to imagine, but I am a fan of daytime running lamps. My kid's 1992 940 has the usual pre-1994 US lamp setup: no DRL. In examining the wiring diagrams, it appears that the only differences between the US non-DRL and Canadian DRL configurations are in one wire into the headlamp switch, and the switch itself. Has anyone converted a US-spec car to Canadian-spec DRL using a Canadian headlamp switch?

I just drive with my headlights on all the time, unlike american cars, they turn off with the ignition. in 12 years I have replaced my bulbs twice.

Volvo forces the parking lights on whenever the headlights are on, and the headlights are switched off the ignition (the centre position of the light switch is not). Here's the surprise...leave the headlight switch in the ON position all the time. The lights go off with the key :-)

all you had to do was read a post on DRL's from two weeks ago. To make a 900 series go to DRL, go to the volvo dealer and buy a light switch for a 1995 940 series (US model and probably canadian model). (the connector on your light switch should have a connection at about 8 o'clock that has two wires connected to it). Remove your old switch and put in the new switch - you will have DRL. (the 95 switch has an additional electic tab that creates the DRL.

I just went the opposite way and got rid of them.

I like the simplicity of that solution, but do Volvo DRLs run at reduced power as the one that Steve has described?

        Re: Canadian:US Daytime Running Lamps 900 1992

volvo DRL's run at full light output (brightness). You should check on exactly what the 3rd party option does. I suspect that it uses the same amount of current that the volvo does, but it likely pulses the current to make the lights appeard dimmer. As I remember with the volvo system, not only are the headlights on- so are the tail lights.

Comments from other threads indicate that the 1992-1995 canadian volvo light switch has a small rod in the switch body. Moving the rod allows you to turn the DRL off or on (as you desire).

    Re: Canadian:US Daytime Running Lamps 900 1992

Well, I finally punted, figuring my time was worth more than my cash, and bought an aftermarket DRL unit from Hamsar in, guess where, Canada. (www.hamsar.com) Cost about $100 and has a photocell to turn on all the lights at dusk. It also runs the headlights at reduced intensity during the day, which seems a better system than Volvo's "all the lights, all the time" system. Looks like it will wire into the back of the headlight switch with no too much grief, so when it warms up here in subtropical Iowa I will get to it.

Volvo use a relay to operate the headlights. You CANNOT run reduced intensity from the headlight switch the way you were hoping. Most of these use PWM to provide the reduction in power and connecting this to the relay coil (the wire available at the switch) will simply make the relay buzz. You'll have to access the wiring after the relay. On Volvo, it goes through the light failure module.

Gene, thanks for the tip. In looking at the wiring diagrams, I think you are correct and this PWM may screw up either the relay or the bulb-out indicator. More homework needed before I choose what to do.

    Re: Canadian:US Daytime Running Lamps 900 1992

    Hello Steve:

The daytime running lights became standard here in Canada in 1990. It should be possible to get a switch from a Canadian boneyard (good time to do it, the exchange is 1.55 right now!). Why not set the US spec switch to on/off with ignition and pull the switch button off? Same result, but a $0 modification!

Funny thing-- the study that showed the benefits of daytime running lights was US, but the recommendations were adopted by the Canadians!

Yes. Just leave the lights on. They go off with the ignition key.

I do this, but my kid won't. I'd rather have a teenage-proof DRL that stays on at all times, regardless of how he fiddles with the lamp switch. And I'd rather have just the headlamps on than everything. Ideas? (other than an aftermarket module?)

        Steve,

This is a perfect application for Duct tape! But I have often wondered if there was anything functionally different between the DRLs and just leaving the headlight on since Volvo was so thoughtful in linking that lighting position to the ingnition. I just leave my headlight on all the time as was mentioned. Never even remember that they are on anymore...

        Re: Canadian:US Daytime Running Lamps 900 1992

Probably not such a hot idea to just have the headlights on. That was allowed by the original DRL specs in Canada. Too many people would forget to turn their lighting system fully on at dusk and would drive around at night totally oblivious to not having any side or tail lights. Score +1 for daylight safety, -1 for night safety. Some manufacturers (and many aftermarket systems) also ran the headlamps at a reduced intensity to lighten the electrical load. This only made matters worse at night. I don't think Volvo ever adopted this method, but went straight to the current DRL standard which has all lights on.

If you've got a headlamp relay then it should be possible to re-wire a system to some form of DRL without having to have the magical DRL light switch. Basically you just run power to the switch through the ignition rather than direct from the battery.

Steve, I congratulate you on being a DRL believer. It does make a difference and I'm sure has saved me and others from having an encounter of the metal-to-metal kind on more than one occasion. From my perspective, about the only real downside to DRL is you can't easily tell where a funeral procession ends. Well, that and those times I drive older cars without DRL as I tend to leave with the lights still on.

Why should we be paying premiums to help cover insurance on those ghost cars with drab paint, tinted windows and no chrome that can't be seen without DRL? It even seems fair to me to hold such people at least partially to blame for any accidents they get into for not being prudent enough to take reasonable, proven, precautionary measures.

People who don't believe in DRL are like people who don't believe in wearing seat belts or bike helmets, mostly they just don't like being told what to do. It's not like it requires any additional effort on their part. Natural selection will eventually eliminate such thinking.

        Re: Canadian:US Daytime Running Lamps 900 1992

Your Kid'll still be able to drive without DRLs unless I'm mistaken...

On our (1995) US-spec 940, the DRLs can be defeated simply by putting the switch "in between" any two of the three positions, and my wife habitually does this.

-It seems we're not the only ones to know this; -our neighbors also drive their identical 1995 940 around without the DRLs on... I can't begin to recount how embarrassing it is to blow a kiss to your neighbour by accident!!!
