Transmission oil change 200 82

Howdy,

Ive been running dexron in this tranny for several months now. The tranny was designed for type f. Im now going to flush the dexron and put in type f. Any comments are advise would be appreciated.

The tranny is a used unit, and when I had it installed the installer put in the dexron. I guess a lot of people are of the opinion that it doesnt make any difference. Im convinced that it should be type f. However, so far the transmission has performed with out any problem.

Now, while Ive got your attention I might as well throw in another couple of things (1)What size hose replaces the rack to injector hose on my 82.

(2)With everything in proper working order, how many times should the engine on my 90- 240 turn over before it starts?

Thanks guys and gals.

Re: Transmission oil change 200 82

Lawrence -- are you talking about an M46 or the automatic? If you've got an M46, don't forget to pull off the bottom plate of the overdrive unit to let the old Dexron drain from there. It's a really messy job (I always get it in my hair and on my glasses) and you'll be surprised how much drains out of the OD unit.

Regarding synthetics, I ran some Redline MTL in my former M46 for 18 months, and Duane Hoberg made some very convincing arguments about avoiding synthetics in the M46. I've gone back to Type F in my replacement M46.

Re: Transmission oil change 200 82

Bentley's manual contains a footnote attributing to Volvo the use of a proprietary synthetic in severe use situations. A part number is provided.

No I have an automatic(AW55). I considered the synthetic, but I decide (a)a bit of controversy comes with the synthetic, (b) Ive been using the "regular" tranny fluid ,sucessfully, for years.

Thanks for the input.

Good luck.

Re: Transmission oil change 200 82

As for the tranny fluids, the best answer that I have ever heard was that the Type F has a higher boiling point than the Dextron/Mercon. Fords typicaly use this type of fluid because they have trouble keeping the fluid cool enough so it doesn't boil over. Once it boils you have bubbles, bubbles mean air, air means A/T not happy. The majority of car companies use the Dex/Merc. I have heard this from a few guys who drag raced and noticed that when they ran the Type F and pulled out the dipstick there were a lot less bubbles in the fluid. As for any negatives in using Type F in a car that calls for Dex/Merc, none that I know of. Anyone??

Hope this helps.
