Stock redline for B230f? 200 85

What is the redline for the B230F engine with stock cam? The tach in my '85 245GL has an orange marking at about 5500 RPM and the "red zone" is from 6000-7000 revv's. So is the redline at 5500, 6000, or 7000 RPM? My Haynes manual says that it's at 5400, but I think that I remember reading somewhere on the BB that it is 6000 or 6500. To tell you the truth, I've never taken it over 5000 rpm (probably not much power up there anyway), but in case I ever get the urge to stand on the throttle or something, I want to be sure that I don't over-rev her and throw the #1 con rod. :-)

Just for laughs: I have a friend who used to go to junkyards with his buddies and rev the junked cars until they blew up. Apperently the Volvos rarely blew up.

Redline is at 6k RPM. There is a hard limiter there, so you can't overrev (except by downshifting at high speed.) The orange indication is simply telling you, "not a good idea to run at this RPM for long periods of time."

The B21s had a 6500 RPM redline, and didn't have a limiter, so it was possible to go even higher. And you're right, there really isn't any power there with a stock cam anyway - but drop in something with more lift, add double valve springs, and you can potentially rev it to 8000 RPM or so (with aftermarket ignition/fuel control)...

Re: Stock redline for B230f? 200 85

I'll rev my stock B21 to over 6000RPMs sometimes just for S&Gs but I've never taken it that far (6500). I tend not to spend too much time over 6grand. The valves don't appreciate it much. BUZZZZZZZ....

Re: Stock redline for B230f? 200 85

I have an '86 245, with LH 2.2 FI, I believe yours would be the same. To the best of my knowledge, the actual redline is at 6000 RPM, and LH 2.2 has a fuel cutoff that I think is supposed to be activated at 6000.

I encountered the fuel cutoff in my car at about 5700-5800 RPM, as I recall. You know when it's happening because the car will start to buck and lurch; needless to say, you will let up on the throttle fast. In any case, this feature will presumably save you from ever over-revving the engine and blowing up that #1 conn rod.

Personally, I think that the B230 could probably see 6500 with no problems assuming it didn't lean out or anything, but this is simply conjecture on my part. As for the over-revving safety feature, I would just as soon do without it. I can't imagine that shutting off the fuel at 5800 revs was any better for my engine than over-revving a little, and even if I ever got near 6500, it would have to be a conscious effort - there's not too much power up there, especially with the stock cam.

Happy Revving
