Modifying Waste gate 700 1990

When i got my chip i was advised to modify my wastegate.

The problem is i dont know exactly what to modify, since i dont think i need a Saab APC boost modification.

Should I play with the screw or ?

    just install a bleed valve. I got one from DawesDevice.com and it works fine. I also suggest a rising rate fuel pressure regulator. You don't want it to go lean at high boost. See the volvo performance site.

    You'll also want a calibrated boost gauge.

    Chip....who needs a steeekin' cheep?

      Just got a DawesDevice, but have yet to install it. Where did you hook the vacuum source? I have the little Mitsu on my 90 740T.

      If you could let me know I would appreciate it. Rather not reinvent the wheel for something so simple.

        Dick,

        You are not looking for a vacuum source, you are looking for the boost output from the turbo that goes to the wastegate actuator. Basically the G-Valve that you have got is not a bleed but rather holds the boost pressure from opening the wastegate until the boost limit you have dialed in is reached. This makes for much quicker spool up time and more responsiveness but as one person has already suggested, gwt a calibrated boost guage before you start dialing it in and listen for pinging and knocking, both are catastrophic. I didn't feel safe dialing mine in until I also had a Air/Fuel ratio meter to see when the mixture started leaning out. Keeping the lines on the G-Valve as short as possible helps to limit boost spikes. I have the K version of the B230FT and felt that 10 psi was a good limit until I run a compression check and do a few other things, Good luck, my wife could even tell a difference after I put the G-Valve on our wagon :-)

        Itsa no brainer...just remove the short 3-4" piece of hose on the turbo itself and replace with the DawesDevice. I used one cable tie to hold the valve to the expansion tank hose. Also used an extra tie as a hose clamp on the turbo nipple(s).

        I used it stock out of the box and noticed no difference in boost...apparently it's calibrated for bleed pressure. Be careful when you start screwing it in, however, because it's easy to spike the gauge off the scale (be very careful with your right foot while you're adjusting the boost) of the stock gauge and without a calibrated gauge (I've yet to install it although I have it inna box) it's easy to blow #1 connecting rod, even at 2500 rpm.

        One thing I've noted is the area around the turbo pop off valve gets really filthy with oil spray/dirt. The Mitsu apparently vents to atmosphere rather than venting into the incoming air like the Bosch/Porsche hooter valves.

          John-

          Is your turbo filthy on the outside, around the flange where the cbv inserts in/bolts to the Mitsu? Or the outside of the valve itself? The valve should dump the trapped charge air back into the intake of the turbo (under vaccuum, the valve opens an internal channel to the intake). You may have a leaky cbv if this is the case.

          I run my poor little Mitsu hard, and the exterior of the turbo is clean. For that matter, so is the interior. Maybe your turbo is starting to throw a little oil around?
