One possible culprit for this is that the wrong wire is connected to the overdrive indicator on your instrument cluster. If my memory serves me well, the overdrive indicator (upshift indicator for manual transmissions) has a separate wire connected on the back of the instrument cluster. If you pull the cluster, it is connected to the lower-right side of as you face the cluster. If the red/white wire is connected there, it is wrong. The red/white wire should not be connected to anything if you don't have a tachometer. If the red/white wire is connected here, it would give you the symptoms you describe.
I forget the color of the correct wire (yellow?). Perhaps someone on the board can specify.
