I Hear You - But Why? 900

I have a perfectly operating power steering system. Properly bled, top quality fluid used, new out of the box pump, yet it whines at low engine speed.
Belt is new and tension properly set, pulley alignment perfect. I've checked all the boxes, yet it whines.
Could my new pump be another quality part made in China?
Should I source an OEM pump from my Pick-A-Part yard?
Fresh rebuild on this B230FT and it runs great! I don't want to listen to some two-bit power steering pump making noise...

What happens to the whine when you go to full lock each way, triggering the relief valve?

If the sound does not change, perhaps it is a problem in the relief valve.

Sorry to digress, but how much did you pay, and what was entailed in your motor rebuild?

The cylinder head was badly cracked, so I sourced one from a Pick-A-Part yard for $65. Machine Shop charges totaled $405 for head and block servicing. I got parts for Volvo, FCP Euro, Eeuro, Pelican and local stores and did the work myself. No boring was required. All standard size rings and bearings were used for a total cost of about $1,200.

As was suggested I think I would run with what you have for a while.

When I open the system to change lines it sometimes takes a length of time for the air to work its way out even after bleeding.

Dealing with this problem with the wife's 2002 PT Cruiser. Replaced the PS pump (pita) and it squealed after replacement. After the air bubbles settled out it was fine. Now with the outside temps being in the low 11 degree, the pump makes noise again. Air bubbles are back again. I think it's now the rack and pinion leaking air in. No leakage anywhere of fuild. Going to flush the system tonight and replace with some Lucas Power steering conditioner. Air Bubbles Suck.

    Dear Townshend Act,

Hope you're well. Why was it necessary to replace the factory-installed pump? I ask, because it seems that factory-installed pumps rarely fail, even on cars with more than 200,000 miles.

All this said, why not get a re-manufactured pump, e.g., by A-1 Cardone or another quality re-builder?

Does the whine change pitch and/or get louder, when you make a turn, which adds to the load on the pump? If so, that suggests some sort of bearing problem. Bearing problems rarely "improve" with time.

If the whine is constant - going straight, turning, etc. - the whine could be caused by something rubbing inside the pump housing. That might "go away", with time.

I'd suggest "wait and see" for a thousand miles or so. If the pump lasts that long - and if the whine persists - you can replace it.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook
