s90 oil filter location S90-V90

Forgive me for this basic question, but after surgery, I cannot crawl around under the car like I used to

My questions - on a 98 S90, does the belly pan have to come off to change the oil filter?
Also, is there a danger of the oil cooler coming loose when removing the filter?
The owner's manual does not say, and the brickboard FAQs are silent on this subject.

Thanks large

NO - The filter is easy to access. I changed my oil this week, also on 98 Volvo S90. Filter is exposed in front of left (driver side) tire, front of control arm, mounted laterally off the lower engine block. Very easy to get to, with nothing in the way. If you have mobility problems, it will be harder to get to the oil pan drain plug, (might need to jack front of car up to squeeze under there to the plug!). Good Luck - Bill

hf63 is correct - I guess it does need to come off. I don't have one on my s90. Guess that is something to get from picknpull! Sorry for the previous bad info, and thanks for bringing to my attention that I need a belly pan. Bill

The belly pan does need to come out to replace the filter.

Just remove the belly pan, unscrew the filter and does all it takes!!!

hmmm, so can the belly pan be removed with the car standing on its wheels, no jack in place? (I ask that because my 940 wagon needs its front end raised to get clearance for the pan's front hooks to release from the frame. But then the 940 oil filter can be removed from above anyway)

      Thanks again

You can remove the belly pan with the car on the ground, but it is easier to do on ramps or jackstands. The air dam on the S/V90 is pretty low.

I usually put our V90 on ramps to do an oil change.

Yep, had to jack the front up to get enough room to drop the rear of the belly pan far enough to unhook the front of the pan from the car frame.

The good news is - I discovered that the past "oil change genius" (or the previous owner) had merely removed the side bolts on the driver side of the pan and bent the pan (plastic) out to get to the filter. Luckily I had some screws of the right thread so I could fasten the side of the pan back as Volvo intended.

And mechanics wonder why I like to watch them work ... so they can't take shortcuts like that.
