Its been awhile...
Anyway, I'm signing on to share an observation I've made concerning the catalytic converter in my '94 940 Turbowagon. Looks like they will last about 20 years or 320,000 mi. Mine has been degrading over the past few years with increasing NOx readings (over 900 ppm last year, over 1,200 ppm this year) each FEB when it is due for inspection here in Jawga. This year I could not get the readings below the MAX levels so bit the bullet & bought a new CAT (Bosal). The NOx readings dropped through the floor (27 ppm).
I knew the CAT was dying about 5 years ago but my yankee heritage had me stretching it out 'til the bitter end.
So if you still have the original CAT in your ride and your NOx readings are getting close to the emission maximums, a new CAT is probably in order.
The Bosal seems to be well constructed with an integral shield on top. It is described as a "direct fit" but there are a few gotcha's. The CAT's inlet bolt flange does NOT come with the bolts installed (as the original does) so you will need to get three 8mm X 40mm X 1.25 pitch bolts (my originals would not release from the old flange and I didn't feel like heating up the flange to try to release them that way), I splurged and went with grade 8 but a 5 would probably do fine.
It also has a bung for an O2 sensor (probably one part# to fit multiple years/models) so I needed to get a plug for that as well. Alternatively, you could probably install an old O2 sensor but I didn't have any lying around.
The unit is obviously smaller than the original (probably about 2/3 the cross section) so we'll see how long it lasts (yeah, no plans to retire the car yet). I figure when the engine needs a rebuild, I'll look into doing a tight squish motor. Right now, except for a small valve tap, there are no engine issues to speak of. Gotta love those red blocks.
