Are all the Gemo clutch cables gone? 200

I've been searching for a new Gemo clutch cable that resembles the original cables put on the 240's and it seems like they have all gone out of stock on the web. Is it time for 240 owners to start a petition or start sending emails to the company to make some more?

There are some for sale with the Gemo name like on IPD's site but they resemble the scam tech cables that did my firewall in on two different cars. I guess its time to start pulling them off cars at the JY when available.

Are all the Gemo clutch cables gone? further research info for sages 200

hi sages- did some net and pedestrian research on this issue. gemo is a berlin germany company which makes high quality cables and related products for various industries, mainly automotive. seems to deal only with the industry and not the consumer.apparently they are still in business. have checked about 8 sources ipd, tasca, fcp, autozone, etc. none have it. checked volvo too. they want $60 upfront without assurances who makes it.would think an oem part from the volvo dealer would not be stinko. convinced from board experience, that the gemo is the only one to get unless you want to risk early failure or a firewall crapout. dont feel like having to do this job twice. do have a nos cable as an emergency spare under the seat for when i get stuck in stinking creek , md. it is labeled from the pioneer company and stamped made in italy oct. 1996. it looks just like the picture of a beck arnly brand. it has a black plastic cover on it and is exactly 42.5 inches, the right length . inside the cable sheath is a freely moving cable coated with a black cover too, i guess for ease of movement. it doesnt look cheaply made. although a poster here advised that tasca has gemo for $29, tasca told me they did not know who made the part but it was listed as oem for my 92 volvo 245. wondering if the best solution for now is to install the pioneer part and see how it works while continuing to search for the gemo. chances for that are about as good as the americans had at the kasserine pass. your final thoughts on this conundrum? thanks tons oldduke

Why not get OEM Volvo today? 29$ from Tasca + ship 200

Is the OEM of today no longer any good? Is it not Gemco any longer? 29$ from Tasca if you mean to order online, why not Tasca?

    Here at http://www.tascaparts.com/parts/index.cfm?searchText=1377669&make=Volvo&action=oePartSearch&siteid=213668

For the M47 240 clutch cable kit PN 1377669.

I dunno about other manual transmissions cables on 240/260 if they vary by transmission models other than M47.

Just don't be putting that old Ford Type F like it says in the owner manual in that M47; synthetic or not. Get the Volvo manual transmission gear lube oil, Volvo PN 1161645. Or you can use the Redline MTL, whatever the website chooser indicates. You'll just have to change it every so often. Maybe every 50k miles or so if the MTL, so says current consensus. See at http://www.tascaparts.com/parts/index.cfm?make=Volvo&year=1992&model=240&submodel=Base&searchText=1161645&action=oePartSearch&siteid=213668.

    cheers,

    dud.

The young "PUPS" at Tasca will have no clue has to who makes the cable. They will tell you Volvo makes it.

Tasca had no idea who manufactured the MC I bought less than a year ago. It was not Ate and the fluid reservoir has cracked for no apparent reason and required replacement with an old Ate reservoir. I sure hope the actual MC is good!

"Is it time for 240 owners to start a petition or start sending emails to the company to make some more?"

I wouldn't bother. The design is pretty simple. Aircraft cable and clamps should work.

Are all the Gemo clutch cables gone? very strange situation 200

hi sages- been looking for a gemo clutch cable . have tried 8 sources- no gemo cables available . the only one which appears close in quality is the beck arnley which costs about $25 at rock auto. remember a number of posters on this forum warning to only use gemo cables. since that seems to be out of production and not available, does anyone here have good experience with the beck arnley. right now cable in my 92 245 seems ok, but want to have a good replacement under the seat if i have to change it on the side of tobacco road at 1am in stinking creek maryland. sure want it to fit perfectly. what would you do? thanks tons oldduke ps- also see rhinopac and atp ones available. anybody have any experience with them.?

        "what would you do?"

On the side of tobacco road at 1am in stinking creek maryland? I'd try VolvoFromHeck's suggestion. Ie. "I would urge all stick shift drivers to learn the simple technique of starting a car in gear and then shifting up and down without the clutch. RWD Volvos work very nicely in that regard."

        Next time avoid Maryland.

          $37 and free shipping

Make sure you state "no substitutions"-I had them ship me a Gemo cable, and they sent me a junk aftermarket one. They sent me the right one, and I was in no hurry.

This is the cable you want, right?

I am more confused than ever on this item. The one above is what I have always expected Gemo to look like. The ipd cable they are calling Gemo looks like what I refer to as the Sachs style cable. Most of the aftermarket cables I see online look the same as ipd's.

I actually have a genuine Sachs cable on my '89. It was a bitch to install but it works fine. I can't attest to other aftermarket quality.

Like you, I really prefer the Gemo, or at least the Gemo as pictured above.

    Have a look at

    http://us.oscaro.com/gemo-clutch-cable-volvo-240-2025-1972-27-129-egf

    and

    http://www.streetperformance.com/m/cats/204-transmission-drivetrain/5657-clutch-cable/10023235-gemo.html?year=1989&make=Volvo&model=244&submodel=DL

I have no idea how reliable either of these places are or if you would receive the cable you want from them. Just throwing out a couple of search results.

I'm thinking your junkyard idea probably is your best bet.

Gemo is the OEM cable used by Volvo. Used to go for like 40 bucks or so. I have two 240 5 speeds and have been delaying buying one for the shelf. Did you spek with anyone at IPD about that cable? Might just be a generic picture they are using?

Ya I'm also looking for one for the "shelf" but like to keep it under the passenger seat. Its one of those repairs that can be done on the side of the road and you don't really know exactly when it might happen. All the sites that use to carry them are sold out so I assumed they have now just relabeled some other brand or Gemo has in fact changed the design from the metal coil look to a rubber one.

transit wind said - "Its one of those repairs that can be done on the side of the road and you don't really know exactly when it might happen." I would urge all stick shift drivers to learn the simple technique of starting a car in gear and then shifting up and down without the clutch. RWD Volvos work very nicely in that regard. Working roadside is very dangerous and should only be done as an extreme measure. I was scared to death a couple of years ago when my '80 245 conked out on I-81 with barely any shoulder to speak of. Trucks whizzed by at 80mph only feet from my disabled car. Trying to keep cool I determined a poor connection at the negative side of the coil was the problem--easily solved and off we went. --not fun. Save clutch cable replacement for a parking lot or rest area. -- Dave

Or, better still, inspect the cable from time to time, like say at the oil change interval.

If it is going to break, it will break at one end or the other and will show early signs of failure. That is how I came to use the Sachs cable on my wagon.

I would rather change it in my own garage than by the side of the road.

I agree about learning the technique, though.

Maybe we should all just buy A/T cars.....no ...wait....I didn't say that.
