Serious Old School Cool for B16B 444-544

Check out this uber rare find on ebay...not cheap, probably not worth the $$ in performance, but think of the bragging rights ;)

If I didn't have almost my entire B18 stuff gathered by now, I'd probably just do this (after having the B16B rebuilt, of course).

I have no experience with these setups... but I can relay what I've heard, which is based on a later B18 Judson (I think.. but maybe the guy I talked to had a B16 unit.)

It's good for something like 2-3 pounds of boost, and maybe a 8-10 hp gain, and at the cost of reliability.

Man, it's a super cool thing. No question about that. But if I had a NOS Judson sitting in a box in the corner and was looking for a bit more power, I'd sell it off on ebay too. then spend the money on engine work and parts and make a normally aspirated unit that I expect would blow the doors off a Judson equipped car. I expect you'd be hard pressed to find anyone on the vintage racing circuit that's using these things (would likely be allowed, being a period modification), on anything, be it a Volvo or MG or Sprite.. etc. (though, on low compression motors, MG TC/TD... they probably make a much bigger difference)

But man, for the bling factor, on a show car perhaps... hell yeah, that's cool as hell!

This is more or less what I would expect from this setup. I totally agree that this thing wold look fsntastic under the hood but that's some visual 'wow factor' is all I would expect. Even when you supercharge a V6 or V8, the typical gains are 15-20% hp gain over stock, at least for a daily driver. That doesn't add up to much in a stock B16B, let alone a tired one.

but...great discussion and cool to see something as rare as this available, and practically brand new, no less. it it was under $1k, I'd probably pick it up. No idea what'd I'd do with it...

I'd think you could configure a B16, a V6 or a V8 blower to provide an increase greater than only 15 or 20%.

I'm certain you can exceed a 20% gain on a B20.

Still neèd the modify hinge for the passenger side to clear the super charger. Who has one of these or a picture to make one. The hinge came with the judson super charger kit for the b16 /444

If anyone is wondering what exactly the Judson will do for performance -- I don't have any experience with the 544 B16 but I did own a 1960 Bugeye Sprite with the original 948cc motor (48hp) and a Judson. A road test of the Sprite in Road & Track showed 0-60 in 25 seconds. My car could do it in 10-11 seconds all day long. Gas mileage did suffer some---stock was in the high 30's-low 40's range. My car delivered 30-32. My Sprite's performance was about the equal to a 1275 Mini-Cooper (the original) which had a larger engine but weighed a bit more (Sprite-1360 lbs). I'd guesstimate my h.p. to be in the 65-70 range. The B16 should make something like 115-125 with the Judson. Some fun! -- Dave

Would need a brake upgrade..... :)

How about engine strain?

Can this be modified to work with what I guess is the regular twin SU setup of the B16 or would the single Holly be better?

Wis I had $2500 to blow...

I don't see how this could be made to work with a twin carb setup but there's no need. It comes with a manifold and single larger carb. I do think an old B16B would need to be rebuilt due to the extra strain, but I don't think this thing would put that much extra stress on it. the beauty of a supercharger vs. turbo is the lower boost and more steady power delivery without needing to fortify the bottom end much, if at all.

I have a hard time believing those performance figures for the bugeye, and the gas mileage to be completely honest.

The Judson is a suck through the supercharger set-up. I've seen SU's (single) used on turbocharged Corvairs (as a suck through) so it could work for the Judson with an adapter--but there wouldn't be any point to that.

OH YEAH, well I think your mother wears combat boots. Seriously--my Sprite was a dead match for TR3's and 4's and Turbo Corvairs and could give an AH3000 a good run for its money. -- honest Dave

A friend of mine had one in his B16B, looked awesome, but nobody could get the car running, specially higer revs were almost unobtainable. He removed the whole stuff after having spent an awful lot of money and now relies on the stock 85 horses which he considers sufficient.
But I agree with you all, it looks great
Michael

Michael...great input on this. I was thinking the same thing with that one "giant" carb (though not "Holley double-pumper" giant). If the ideal setup for these things is two smaller carbs, I can't see how this would be easy to tune, particularly with the carb sitting so far back on the manifold now. There's almost certainly going to be uneven distribution of fuel into the cylinder head.
