I am in need of some assistance. I am replacing the stock Boge front strut cartridge on my 91 volvo 240 sedan. I am replacing them with bilstien brand cartridges from IPD. I have removed the boge cartridge and cannot find the rubber grommit it is suppose to have in it according to my haynes manual. I see there is a metal ring in the bottom that seperates the ball joint from the strut cartridge, it is for sure metal, I have tried to remove it but it lookes as if it is pressed into the tube. I have a bentley and a volvo manual and they do not show the strut innerds, so I am not sure if I was suppose to have this rubber grommit on the bottom of the strut cartridge and it is missing or if the manual was wrong. The other manuals speak nothing of the metal ring inside the strut tube. I am not sure if I am suppose to remove this metal ring and how to do it. I am soaking it with kroil right now, I have used a socket just smaller than the inside tube diameter and a long extension to try to drive it out but no movement so I did not try to force it. If any of you have experience with this issue I would appreciate your experience in this matter. For a Christmas gift I have decided to rebuild my daughters complete front end, struts, control arm bushings and ball joints, tie rod ends, steering rack (was leaking. The car had a terrible clunking noise in the front end when driving hitting small bumps. I have not been able to find the problem as of yet, the ball joints all looked fine , the tie rod ends, strut bearing, so I am replacing every thing because I have to replace the rack and pinion, because it goes through a quart a week. My daughter accidently put power steering fliud in, instead og type F fluid so no it really leaks,Tried lucas which did help but being I live in a cold weather state the engine has to work harder to move the pump and in the morning steering is very stiff. Replacing unit with eeuro parts rebuilt replacement. I have no Idea if I have a ZF type rack or a camgear but I ordered the cam gear. But am stuck right now questioning these manuals with what I have on these strut cartridges.
