$2 brake drum puller! 120-130

You guys may already figured this out, but I didn't see it anywhere on the board, so I thougt I would post it.

I needed to pull the drum off of my old Volvo, and couldn't afford the $125 puller from IPD.

So here it is:
I went to my local auto parts store and borrowed a regular axle puller. A lot of parts stores lend out tools for free. Autozone and o'reilly both lend out tools here in Oklahoma. (you just pay for the wholesale price of the tool when you get it, then they refund it when you bring the tool back). Be sure to get the 4.5 -5.5 adapter.
Then I went to Ac hardware and got a Grade 8 bolt to replace the slide hammer that comes with the axle puller. I would not reccomend anything other than a grade 8, just to be sure nothing goes wrong. Anyway, this was a very cheap way to do it, and it worked perfectly. I also suggest putting some grease or white lithium on the axle and the bolt to ease friction.
This also provides a solid place to put a bar so you can really torque on the bolt!
And you can use the slide hammer to put the drum back on too!

Good luck!
Kent

Here is an image of the puller that I made from some hydraulic pipe, 10mm steel plate, a 20mm bolt and a threaded bush that I turned on a lathe. It is purpose made and will only work on the 122S or car with a similar wheel bolt PCD.

No not at all. I am so sorry to have sounded sarcastic. Working on these old cars calls for ingenuity and creativeness. I was truly excited that someone had found a financially reasonable method for removing the rear brake drums. $100+ for a German made puller is silly. I'm glad to know that there are less expensive methods! Thank you for doing the leg work. Good luck with you Volvo!

¡Great job!
Fer sure the slide hammer would not have done it.
One thing you could do if you have a problem torquing the center bolt is to leave
the lugnuts unscrewed about half an inch, tighten up the center bolt till it's snug,
then go around and tighten the lugnuts about half a turn each until it pops.
That is pretty much the principle of my puller. The lugnuts do the work so no
center bolt is required.

This works every time!

befor I bought my IPD puller I rented the volvo dealers heavy duty one, sometimes they are nice enough to let you use their's. I put a depo of the tool value which was refunded when I returned it.
