I'm not exactly sure what you mean, but mine shifts like a ... well, a Volvo! I LIKE the way it shifts, and the last time my wife drove my car (she missed driving it between 50k and 150k) she remarked about how well the clutch and transmission were now "broken in"! Bushings, clutch, transmission etc. are all original.
I do like the way it shifts, compared to my Porsche and my Acura. If you're comparing a good SVC70 to that previously-wrecked S70, who knows how badly the linkages and components are now misaligned.
I'm fairly sure Volvo dropped throttle cables and went entirely to drive-by-wire starting with the 1999 model year. 1998s and older are more compatible with fun for shade-tree mechanics.
