According to rumor (so far), Volvo, BMW, Audi, Jag, etc are all saying that todays 12 volt systems are electrically maxed out due to too much "stuff" going on now. Here's where everyone seems to think the future might get scary......going to ~42 volt systems and THAT means totally redesigning many electrical parts, systems from what we know now. They really don't have todays 12 volt systems mastered (not just Volvo, most cars in general) as today, the systems are seriously over-complicated, especially high line Euro cars. The idea of upping voltage and totally redesigning systems scares most of us and now have serious doubts that things will be "troublefree", I think NOT. Nothing radically new is EVER troublefree in the auto world. I don't yet know what model year they'll try doing this but it could be by '05 (not '04)?
I think the Japanese cars are probably better with electronics, more dependable compared to todays Euro cars if that's an issue (desiring to stay away from dealerships for example).
