This is really not that big a deal.
It essentially involves just changing the timing belt which, if you follow the basic procedures outlined in any of the repair manuals, is pretty straightforward.
I have the same engine as you do and changed the belt a couple of months ago.
Yes, if you do the job incorrectly, you risk destroying your engine. The procedure, however, is very straightforward and you can even check your work before starting, and potentially damaging, your engine.
No special tools needed. Don't have to be a Volvo specialist.
