Unfortunatly I couldn't write the exact mechanics of it out for you, but the ignition switch in the 850 can work and still cause problems at the same time. It's a well documented issue, althoug usually it throws ABS lights or causes headlights to turn off...wierd stuff like that. I wouldn't just replace that, but It was a suggestion. Check Bay 13 on Volvospeed.com for reference to the ignition switch.

If it's the ignition coil (I had mine replaced at 80k) then it'll probably cost you a little over $100. I should have done it myself, but didn't...iut would be very easy.
