You might want to try a different gas station, just to eliminate the pump as a problem.
Did you over fill the tank, like after 'normal' automatic shut off and then 'round up' to the nearest dollar or wait to have it shut off again? That can cause gasoline to flow into the charcoal canister and leave no where for the fumes to go.
As for the 'leak', there have been reported problems with the vent hose becoming detached or cracked at the top of the tank. Keep an eye on that area, it is not an easy repair.
