The sound was valve chatter, definitely a sick pattern opening and closing at about 2 Hz. My initial description as "glug, glug, glug.." was inaccurate. If this site allowed posting an audio file attachment, I think someone would have ID'd the sound as solenoid actuation stuck in a repeating loop. Sorry for the bad steer.
