P0507 Idle RPM too high; engine shuts off with clunks S60

Our 2007 S60 with 2.5 Turbo has been having some idling problems (wavering RPM). In neutral, it glides up to about 900 RPM. Twice recently, it threw the

P0507 Idle Air Control System RPM Higher Than Expected

I replaced the Mass AirFlow Meter, and the idle was a little less choppy, but now it's still running too high.

I tried to listen for vacuum leak immediately after shut down....no hiss detected under excellent listening conditions.

Another clue is the way the engine shuts down. There are 2 thuds when shut off. Are these late firings?
First Volvo I've seen this problem with (on 12th Volvo).

This S60 has the B5254 T2 engine. We just had a complete PCV reconditioning (all new parts) a year ago.
It's at 98K miles, and is up-to-date on all service calls.

P0507 Idle RPM too high; engine shuts off with clunks S60

    Post-mortem:

The Volvo dealer figured this one out:

It was a multi-component failure in the EVAP system (sucks up fuel fumes from the fuel tank, so they don't pollute the atmosphere.)

These two solenoid valves were both failing to actuate:

    30670448 Turbo Boost Pressure valve

8653908 EVAP Vapor Canister Purge Valve

When I got the car back, all the reported problems seem to be fixed. There engine shutoff "kick" is gone, and the idle RPMS is steady at 650-700.

They used the individual solenoid valve testing feature in VIDA to figure this out, where you actuate one valve at a time, and listen for the audible click. Chalk up a big win for VIDA. The Volvo shop was happy I did some prelim stethoscope work, and heard the anomaly coming from the EVAP system ( there was a constant rhythmic valve "chirp" heard when I place a cellphone mic in the fuel filler throat).

So thanks for the advice to probe for vacuum leak with stethoscope.

Is the EVAP canister or vacuum line suspect? Would a faulty canister that produce the "glug, glug, glug..." sound I hear inside the fuel tank?

Is the canister located in the rear wheel well on the driver's side?

The noise you describe could be the excess fuel returning to the tank.

Most vacuum leaks can not be heard. Even gaping holes don't make noise. Sometimes, spraying carb cleaner on suspected areas can change the idle to give you an indication of a leak.

The sound was valve chatter, definitely a sick pattern opening and closing at about 2 Hz. My initial description as "glug, glug, glug.." was inaccurate. If this site allowed posting an audio file attachment, I think someone would have ID'd the sound as solenoid actuation stuck in a repeating loop. Sorry for the bad steer.

I got a stethoscope and went listening for a vacuum leak. Nothing heard up front around the engine.

However, the sound coming from inside the fuel tank is weird. You can hear the steady purr of the fuel pump, but much louder is a "glug, glug, glug..." sound. I wish I could attach a sound file -- will try. Nope...only accepts image files.

Send email address and I'll get you the sound clip.

You need to look for vacuum leaks while the engine is running, not after shutdown.

Have you cleaned out the throttle body? Both symptoms "might" be caused by the throttle plate not closing completely.
