It is a little cold out and something is making a strange noise under the car. At first I suspected a drooping heat shield hitting the rear prop shaft, tinny sound with rubbing noise. Really evident when the car is being backed out of the balmy (32F) garage and slowly going down the snow packed street. The noise goes away as the car warms up, usually in 1 mile or less.
Today, it came back as I was pulling into a left turn lane to get off the highway. Very strange.
This a hard one to diagnose, the AWD keeps me from being able to turn the wheels in the rear unless all 4 are airborn. I only have 2 jack stands. Besides, the freezing garage floor is full of slush/sand.
Could it be the slide pins?? When I put on new rotors in September, I remember the pins being extremely pitted and dirty on the driver's side. I cleaned them as best I could, greased them up and put them back on. Should I buy new pins? The rear calipers are original with 186,000 miles on them.
Of course, it could still be the brake shield coming loose...
If it weren't so cold, the entire rear brake assembly would already be lying on the garage floor instead of me typing at this keyboard.
