The 1-4-1 is the pedal sensor. It comes on when their is either a short to the ground, supply, an open circuit, or a faulty signal. Not very helpful, but basically it means the the wiring or the sensor itself is bad. The connection could have been at fault, meaning the cleaning/greasing of the socket could have fixed ya.

The 436 tells you that your engine is running too rich. Most likely an air leak, but first check compression (much easier then checking every line first, and if its the cause you saved yourself several hours..). Then check intake and exhaust leaks. If there isn't any then you check the fuel pump relay. To do this you pull out fuse 2 and read off amperage between sub-3k rpms and 3k+ rpms and notice the difference. Still good? Then check fuel pressure, should be 300kPa, squeeze return line it should jump up (don't let it go over 600kPa). Then check the regulator, (vacuum pump to the regulator, and suck out air, fuel line pressure should drop by same amount as the pump drops.). Then check residual pressure, meaning turn off pump and wait 20 mins, it shouldn't drop below 200kPa. Then check the Rear O2 Sensor, do this by clamping the EVAP line to the intake manifold (you might set a code, thats OK) then starting the car, wait till the sensor starts working. Squeeze the return line, the sensor should give off .8V, then when you release it should drop back to 0V. If all that works, replace the front O2 sensor.

AFAIK they're related in no way except your car is old. I'm guessing there's some corrosion in the sensor's socket/wiring that caused it do lose continuity, and one (or more) of your vacuum lines have degraded. Replace the bad line/elbow and I think you'll be golden. That said, you'll probably have to reset the fuel trim table (battery off 15+ minutes) and do a long drive cycle (1-200+ miles) to check everything.
