Lanne,

I would be surprised if most Volvo buyers didn't know its reputation as a performance car.

The appeal is that you have what looks like a "mama's car" that kicks butt , especially in the turbo versions.

I haven't had much experience with the RWD cars, but the 850/70 series are great stealth vehicles.
