It could be a bad ETM, but I would look at cleaning the TB. A bad coil is very possible, that would make the single spark plug look bad at low rpms.

Send him to the dealer to get the correct codes, and avoid that mechanic he went to.

There is a scanner for sale in Sweden for around $200, that reads Volvo specific codes up to 2007 - including SRS and service light turn off. Do a search on scanner.
