Re: Is one able to disconnect the AWD system to avoid Bevel Gear problems? V70-XC70 1998

I owned a 1996 Subaru Outback Wagon...there was a fuse under the hood with the inscription "FWD" on it...I figured if I pulled this fuse, the Outback would be FRONT wheel drive only...but I never tested it or asked a mechanic.

This would be a very slick "solution" to the XC bevel gear problem...pull the fuse for all but the times you really need ALL wheel drive.

I'd really like to hear more about the possibility of either:

1) Electrically/electronically disabling the AWD, or

2) Dropping the driveshaft.

I've never dropped a driveshaft myself, but I know that on some (most? all?) it's like a 3-minute job.
