Is one able to disconnect the AWD system to avoid Bevel Gear problems? V70-XC70 1998

I love my V70 AWD but as I've mentioned before, the infamous "bevel gear failure" is on my mind. What are your guys' thoughts on disconnecting the rear-wheel drive part? Do you think it's possible? Would there be fault codes generated, etc?

Also, I've heard bevel gear failures running from $2000 to $6000. What is the realistic figure?

I hate worry so much about it, but I don't want to sell the car. However, I would hate Volvo AND myself if I were ever saddled with a multi-thousand dollar repair bill.

Thanks again guys.
