We had a similar but not exact experience with out 98 XC (same arrow flashing), it was diagnosed as a failed switch in the Economy/Winter mode switch/mechanism. I don't have the dealer report with me. A long weary drive using back roads to the volvo dealer far away in limp mode (felt like 3rd gear) solved the "under warranty problem. Good luck if its the same problem.D~
