The ETS is under warranty for 10 years and 200K miles. The ETS light must be on when you go to the dealer or he will find something else wrong! They do not like to replace ETSs. But, be satisfied with a reprogram and cleaning if it is free.
You need at least 89 octane for normal driving, 92-93 octane for high rpm, greater than 5000rpm. The knock sensors will retard timing and pour too much gas through the injectors. This could have an effect on the 2 cat sensors. I suggest, if the P0422 code comes back, to pull the sensors, clean them with carb cleaner, and put them back before buying new ones.
The XC is a nice car, but do check the spark plugs and make sure they are not fouled. Use Volvo plugs, they work best even though they are more expensive. You didn't buy a race car, you bought a car that will take you 100K miles through all kinds of weather + haul more than you will ever need.
