LOL a bed sheet! Yes, the bed sheet was forced into the latch and caught on the spring. When the sheet was yanked out, the spring was pulled from its holder.
I know where this spring is, having seen it a long time ago, but doubt you will ever get it back in and working properly. The spring helps open the latch and keeps it from rattling.
