Keith,

01 esp awd had software bugs that could damage the transmission if the software was not upgraded fast enough--this was fixed in 02+. If the car is still under warranty it is usually covered. Volvo will usually try software first, then valve housing and is tough as hell to get a new tranny out of. good luck--software is not so bad but when it comes to the Volvo tranny's it's all expensive!
