From what I understand the '01's had a shift into neutral at stop and then as you give it gas a shift into 1st gear. You can disable this with a software download from your dealer. For you just now finding that the car shifts into 1st from stop most likely means that you need to flush your transmission fluid and fill with new. Klaus hinted at this. Your car will take the new 3309 fluid (Don't put Dextron/Mercron in it...will kill your transmission). Both Volvo and Mobil offer the 3309 fluid...Mobil for much less.
