Hesitation and difficult running S80 2000

sure sounds like it is the ETS/ETM. However the lights dimming and brightening may indeed be the alternator, as suspected in the original post. This however should not cause issue at highway speeds. I would get both checked out. Alternator can be checked at a PepBoys or Autozone. The ETM is a dealer only item, but currently is under warranty until 200K miles or 10 years ownership, so you should be okay. Good luck!
