940/740/240 cars are kinda back among kids that age so long as they are in good shape and not an obvious beater.
The RWD Volvos will be better for a first time driver because of the visibility advantages they have over most contemporary cars as Klaus pointed out. The inevitable fender benders of a 16 year old will be easier to fix or ignore as well.
Otherwise, the S40 is solidly reliable and a great car. But then I'm 36, not 16.
