I think you'd be hard pressed to blame Ford for a Volvo's ills. Ford was smart about it, they weren't putting Ford parts in Volvos, they were making Fords out of Volvos!

If you're shopping for a replacement for your V70XC, do some research into the AWD systems used. The AWD in your '99 is the least reliable of the bunch. The newer systems are much less prone to problems.

FWIW, I took a 2001 V70 2.4T to 268K without any tranny issues (or a flush for that matter).
