WTB v70 - Recommendations? V70-XC70

Well my bulletproof 88 740 Turbo with 319K on the clock was the victim of a hit and run last week and the insurance company just laughed when I asked if it could fixed, so I need to replace it. I've always loved the v70 wagons but I've come to learn there are some years to avoid. I was searching the site for a buyers guide but did not find one, so I've been searching threads picking up bits and pieces. I have only about 5K to spend, but the cars I'm seeing in that range are typically 2001-05 with around 130-150K on them. They appear to be nice cars but I'm starting to suspect the price is accounting for transmission and other problems that hit these cars around this mileage.

Can anyone offer some advice on what years to consider and what price ranges are expected? Thanks in advance.

Avoid 01-02 Volvos. The 03 can be OK. 04 and up are usually good. It is not the miles on the car, but the maintenance history that counts. The first Tbelt change is around 120K, or 10 years, includes tensioner.

Depending on your part of the country, the AWD XC can come in handy when slipery, but rob you of 2 mpg and a little zip.

If there are roof rails, ask about the load carriers - cross bars.

Two sets of keys and remotes are required. Make sure they both work.

These engines really want synthetic motor oil.

2003 V70 2.4 NA. Purchased at about 145,000 miles. Maintenance at that point was "OK" but not the best. A few battle scars on the exterior. Did some front end work, fixed tailgate wiring and flushed fluids early in my ownership. (Was probably the first trans flush it ever had.) Now has about 220,000 miles. Runs and shifts perfectly. Have made several 800 mile runs between Dallas/Atlanta, fully loaded with cargo, 28-29 MPG at 75+ MPH.

Make sure you get two key fob as they're expensive. If one is missing, negotiate the price down about $400-500. Seriously.

    Good luck.

+1 on the two key fobs. We only got one with the `04, I wasn`t thinking clearly when we picked the car up. The previous owner had lost the 2nd one so there was only "one". I would have factored that into the purchase price.

The newer the better. If you can afford it, buy the last years of that body style: 2006 or 2007. My sister's family has a 2006 V70 XC with well over 100k and it has been very reliable. They intend on running it into the ground... First my niece now nephew is driving it.

Nothing wrong with the 2004 or 05's either.

I believe the 2003 and newer are fairly bullet proof.

    I have a 2004 v70 with 175,000 (bought with 60K miles) and no Problems.

    good luck

I would pass on `03`s as we have a XC70 with tranny issue, ie, hard shifting, etc which began around 200K. The car is not driveable which is unfortunate as the engine is running strong. We also have an `04 XC70 with 190K & no tranny problems "so far". The `04 was purchased from a friend @ $3K & required some front end repairs which were, of course, disclosed before purchase. It runs "like a top"!
