Avoid 01-02 Volvos. The 03 can be OK. 04 and up are usually good. It is not the miles on the car, but the maintenance history that counts. The first Tbelt change is around 120K, or 10 years, includes tensioner.
Depending on your part of the country, the AWD XC can come in handy when slipery, but rob you of 2 mpg and a little zip.
If there are roof rails, ask about the load carriers - cross bars.
Two sets of keys and remotes are required. Make sure they both work.
These engines really want synthetic motor oil.
