The cause of this problem is often increased friction in the latch mechanism. The friction comes from grit, grime, and corrosion. This leads to increased loading (translation: You gotta yank harder on the handle to open the door), and this eventually shears the hinge pin.
Lube the hell outta the latch mechanism and all linkages. Up inside the door, squirt grease 'n oil (not crappy WD-40) all over the mechanism and blast it with compressed air. This pushes the oil into the guts of the mechanism.
The oil will drip from the door for about a week (part of our antirust program).
I've done this to EVERY 240 I've owned, all doors.
