<description>I think it&#x27;s an excellent suggestion, even though I&#x27;m inclined to suspect the exhaust system. I&#x27;ll try to measure the spacing between the pan and frame.

Thanks again.

<title>[RWD] [900] [1993] Exhaust vibration -posted by- Don Foster</title>
<description>Good point. I have not, but:
1) The mounts appear new (Volvo stickers on &#x27;em), and were probably replaced before I bought the car.
2) I had these hydraulic mounts fail on my &#x27;91 740, and that cause a real vibration in the car. I could feel it in the driver&#x27;s seat. No the same in the 940 -- this is a resonance sound, not a mechanical vibration.
3) The car has 155k original miles. I&#x27;d guess a bit young for mounts (unless they were Scam Tech).

Checking the mounts is a good idea... thanks. I&#x27;ll try to gauge the gap between the pan and crossmember.

<title>[RWD] [900] [1993] Exhaust vibration -posted by- Don Foster</title>
<description>Hi Chris,

I notice a humming or &#x22;drumming&#x22; sound as the engine revs through the 2000-2500 rpm range. No mechanical vibration in the car. It sounds like all the world like exhaust, but it&#x27;s not something I feel in the car. I don&#x27;t think the pipe&#x27;s hitting anything -- I think it resonates.

Nothing objectionable in neutral.

<title>[RWD] [900] [1993] Exhaust vibration -posted by- Don Foster</title>
<description>Does anybody remember anything about an optional Volvo bracket that fits from bell housing to exhaust pipe? My &#x27;93 940 (non turbo) has an annoying but mild exhaust vibration.... and I seem to recall from years back that a special bracket was available to reduce this problem.

I didn&#x27;t find anything in the FAQs about it....

<title>[RWD] Hi everybody... -posted by- Don Foster</title>
<description>Dennis,

Teaching is a labor of love, not for love of money. But it *is* fun and very rewarding -- more so than my 30 years of eng&#x27;g.

The reason for teaching is amusing..... after retiring from eng&#x27;g in &#x27;99, I decided to go to school for a whimsical program, professional writing (as it turned out, a GREAT choice for semi-retirement).

After three weeks on campus, the department chair said to me, &#x22;Hey, you&#x27;re an engineer.  How would you like to teach tech writing to our engineering students?  Our English faculty cannot talk to those kids.&#x22;

So, I did and I&#x27;ve never looked back. I earned the degree in &#x27;03 and ended up teaching tech writing, business communication, freshman English, and desktop publishing. The eng&#x27;g students relate to me (and I to them) so they walk away either really angry or very happy. On the one hand, they can&#x27;t BS me. One the other hand, we can talk about technical topics and I resonate with them.

I also teach SolidWorks to eng&#x27;g students.

Great fun!

<description>Yep, after wife played demolition derby on the public roads for years, daughter and friends decided to really do it. I think it&#x27;s somewhere on YouTube....

As I recall, the tranny mount snapped in a side impact and the car wouldn&#x27;t shift, so it didn&#x27;t make it to the end. But the kids had fun and my friend with the ramp truck took the carcass to the scrap yard when they were still paying $225/ton.

<description>Wow, that&#x27;s terrific!  I love your procedure.

Honestly, I learned it elsewhere and simply repeated it here -- I did not innovate the &#x22;rope trick.&#x22;

(The only critique I&#x27;d have for your procedure is that in North America, commas and periods go inside quotes unless the quote means inches. Not so in Europe. See? Even with grease under my fingernails and two eng&#x27;g degrees, I still wear my English instructor&#x27;s hat and try to annoy students. &#x26;#091grin&#x26;#093)

<description>Hey, Chris...

Sorry I didn&#x27;t think to broadcast the demise of my ES&#x27;s on the BB -- but they were too far gone. Neither had run since &#x27;85 and both sat outside the whole time. You can imagine the condition of the floorboards. Gone but not forgotten.

Both were 4-spd/OD and both went to Don Thebault (www.p1800.com), so you might contact him for parts.

Keep smiling!

<title>[RWD] Hi everybody... -posted by- Don Foster</title>
<description>&#x22;The best we can do these days is retrading!&#x22;

Ain&#x27;t that the truth!!

Ten years ago, retiring was a real possibility -- in my case, I grabbed the money and ran while there was money to grab. About 20 minutes later discovered that I didn&#x27;t really like sitting around. By the end of the summer, I was back in college.

I discovered that when one&#x27;s career didn&#x27;t depend on academic performance, then learning new stuff could really be fun -- and teaching it to young students was even more fun.

<title>[RWD] Hi everybody... -posted by- Don Foster</title>
<description>Hi Mike,

Yep, I check in now and then -- not nearly as much as I should or as I used to. Retirement took me back to college and then into the classroom as a professor (five courses last semester, down to a more manageable four classes this semester).

I never realized how insanely busy retirement could be. Thus, the advice is:

Stay working if you don&#x27;t want to work much.

Retire is you wanna work your ass off (and not have time for your friends on the BB).

Cheers!

<title>[RWD] Hi everybody... -posted by- Don Foster</title>
<description>Just a quick post to remind folks that I still occasionally check in on the venerable BB and read up on my friends&#x27; headaches and eurekas. As with so many of you, life has been busy and distracting -- but the ol&#x27; Bricks keep on chugging, knock on wood &#x26;#091thunk, thunk&#x26;#093.

Had to junk a few (including my beloved &#x27;73 P1800&#x27;s), but six remain in the yard, though one is headed to the boneyard. And daughter happily drove wife&#x27;s &#x27;91 740 in the demolition derby -- though I&#x27;m not sure it looked much different afterward the event. (Wife drives every day that way, so the car was prepared.)

Happily teaching in my retirement. Drop me a line to harass.

<title>[RWD] [200] [1986] Died while driving now won&#x27;t start -posted by- Don Foster</title>
<description>I agree with Dan -- could be a broken timing belt. But, if so, then no spark. And if no spark, then no fuel.

Another possible reason for fast cranking is low compression, which can result from excess fuel washing down the cylinder walls. No oil means no seal, which means blow-by -- no compression pressure.

And a possible cause for that could be a failed fuel pressure regulator, which would allow excess fuel into the cylinders.

Is the oil overfull? Does it small like gasoline? Are the plugs fuel soaked?

Pull the fuel pump fuses and crank again; see if it tries to start (on the residual fuel). If you think this is the problem, then replace the fpr.

Pull the plugs and squirt 6-12 squirts of oil into the cylinders to restore the seal and compression.

When it starts, expect clouds of (harmless) oil smoke for five minutes.

Be sure to change the gasoline diluted oil.
