Ambient temp gauge wiring 200

I just bought an ambient temperature gauge for next to nothing on ebay, it was just too rare a deal to not jump on. It will probably just sit on my desk for ages till I get around to doing something with it, since it's just the gauge, the sender and wiring aren't included.

Do I have to locate the proper temp sensor from a Volvo dealer, and if so is the sender specific to 240s, or do later models use the same unit (makes it easier to locate if it's a replacement part for a 940 for example)

Would it be reasonable easy to get a generic 12V temp sensor and just figure out the correct resistances to calibrate it?

As I said it will probably just sit on my desk for a while (it is a cool looking paperweight) I might even put it in unwired, I just like the look of the thing.

Also, what's the best spot to mount the sender for an accurate reading?

Thanks again oh wise ones.

    Is this for your '77?

If so, does this mean you found an ultra rare center cluster gauge that isn't a tach?

I think it's out of a GT cluster. Yeah it probably would fit in place of the tach, I'm still not sure what I'm actually going to do with it. My car didn't come with a clock, so it's got space between the two centre air vents which may be getting dremelled out to fit my new gauge.

There's a guy at the uni (lives next door to a friend of mine) who has a proper GT dash in his 244. I've decided I have to own one now, it just looks way too cool.

Volvo used a VDO water temp sender for the air temp gauge. Long ago I found myself with 3 gauges and only one sender so I went to a local parts house and the guy looked up the number. The egauges/VDO part number is 323-095 it's a 1/8"x27 thread 250 degree sender ~$7.00. I tested it against the stock Volvo sender and it's an exact match reading wise.

I mount the senders under the front bumper this gives a good reading of road/air temp. The gauge has standard VDO wiring, + power, - ground, and G for sender input. One wire from the light is spliced into the ground wire and the other gets spliced into the light brown wire carrying power to the console lights.

Thanks Dave. Any chance they used the same for the water temp sender in the head? I've probably got a spare one of those somewhere.

I've got a couple of the senders lying around. People are in such a hurry to grab the gauge, they forget all about the sender. Email me and I can hook you up with one...

Depending on the year, your car is likely already wired. If you take out your battery, you should find a harness wrapped up that has a rubber boot at the end of it. It'll be a yellow wire and you'll find it right behind the driver side headlight backing plate, under the battery tray.

I might just do that when I've got money for postage lol. It's too cold at the moment to go and take my battery out, but I'll have a look for that bit of harness during the day. I have a home made aluminum battery tray pretty securely bolted in after the original rusted out. Hopefully any wires under it are still accessable.
