I have just purchased a converted 700 series and would not be even close to duplicating it for the purchase price. It needs a few things, but hopefully will not be very expensive to get on the road.
I raced motorcycles for a long time and found the same kind of poor resale value on racebikes that had all of the nicest add-ons. In that market, you really only get .20 cents on the dollar for all of the aftermarket upgrades. It was always best to buy a used racebike with all the goodies on it because it would be too expensive to duplicate.
Back to cars...from all of the ones I looked at, the owners have put either a lot of love, or a lot of money into them. Having 3 kids, I have no love or money to put into a car at the moment.
If I really enjoy the car, I will learn as much as I can about it. If I enjoy driving it, I will put a ton of miles on it and then consider making my own with any upgrades or changes that I feel it could use.
Good luck!
