1978 262C Bertone - What's it worth?

For Sale is a restored 1978 Volvo Bertone (262c). The car was completely restored in the late 90's back to new condition. No expense was spared and as a result of a quality restoration, and very little use, the car remains in great condition. The restoration was completed with all OEM factory parts directly from the dealership. The leather interior was also redone and looks better than the factory installation. This was the first production year of the 262c. The entire cabin was wrapped in Italian leather by Bertone from the factory. The original and replaced black leather is free of any ware or cracking. Very few original parts remain as the goal of the restoration was to have a go anywhere reliable car. As part of the restoration the engine was swapped for a Tuned Port Injection 5.7LT V8. The engine continues to run very strong and starts reliably. It is difficult to part with this car but the time has come. I do not know the value of this rare car (Less than 1900 produced in 1978 I think) What should the price of this car be?

Bertones have never brought the prices some of us think they should. the PRV V-6 was an awful engine choice for Volvo. The Italians "chopped the top" on a 240 and they all rust in the cowl/trunk area--was no rustproofing done right.

The V8 conversion is a plus, the V8 makes a Volvo a real world driver. I did an Olds/Bertone years ago, and drive a 760 V8 . A restored non-rusty Bert could go for some bucks. It's easier to come down on your price than to come up. If you are not buried in it, I recommend put it out there on EBay, Bat, even Hemming for 11,500 and see what comes.

In my opinion, much of the 'value' of a restored Bertone was lost when the engine conversion was done. I have a V8 powered 242 -- so I like them that way. But as clean as mine is, all the money that's been put into the conversion doesn't help value of the car much, if at all.

One of the biggest challenges here is that different people have VASTLY differing opinions about what 'pristine' or 'excellent' or ' like new' means. Without seeing a lot of detailed pictures, it's really hard to even hazard a guess on value. And, of course, it can look good in pics and have LOTS of problems in person. Hemmings lists the value of that car on the 'high' side as $6,000. Therein lies your problem.

Having said that, recently a 5.0L wagon that wasn't particularly clean went for almost $10k on the Bring-A-Trailer site. You might consider auctioning your car there. www.bringatrailer.com. They make the decisions about which cars they auction each week.

If it's truly as clean as you describe, my guess is that the right buyer might be willing to part with something between $7500 and $10,000. If a buyer offered more than that (or auction) I'd jump on it if selling it is something you truly want to do.
