Timing Belt Replacement - Necessary Components

Hi. I am originally an 1800 ES guy but need to do some work on a 1987 240 that I may be buying. The timing cannot be set properly and it seems time to replace the timing belt. I know I need the belt and cover gasket and maybe a tensioner. What else might I need? A short list and any advice would be very much appreciated ( I do have a Haynes manual). I have seen pictures of the cover gasket and it seems open at the bottom (does not complete the shape of the cover). Is there another gasket I will need to complete the bottom? Thanks, Steve
