Any other symptoms? Did the tranny "howl" in any gear? Were any other gears difficult to engage?
A worn layshaft/gear is the likely culprit as the front bearings tend to die first. This can lead to a slightly "cocked" laygear that the reverse pinion refuses to engage.
Other potential troubles all center around the reverse pinion. It may have a displaced shaft (unlikely) or a bad pin in the lever (more likely). It could be a terribly mangled gear but that should at least make lots of noise when you attempt to engage it!
