Why were the older 240 more fancy?

By '89 it rose to $20,100.

20k was a lot of dough for a car in 1989."

15K was a lot of dough for a car in '84, right up there with contemporary luxury offerings from the Big Three. On the other hand, you could buy a Chevy for under 10K.

How about the venerable Lexus LS-400? $40K when it debuted in '89.
