Prices on 240 rose FAST over the years.
an '84 244GL/manual MSRP was $15,400
By '89 it rose to $20,100.
20k was a lot of dough for a car in 1989. To keep the price from getting too high, content was removed. Competition was fierce. A loaded Toyota Cressida cost the same $20k.
To be frank and fair, the 240 was slated to die in '86. Popularity kept it alive.
In the rest of the world, you could buy a stripped 740DL. That should have been the base model Volvo in America, but it never got here.
