Painting rubber bumpers and mirrors? 700 1989

Paintng the bumpers on my 740 wagon is part of my annual spring clean up. I use SEM products made specifically for bumpers (available at auto body supply stores) and have always kept them black because I think the black looks good with red. The black really seems to make the body color pop out at you.

Having said that, I did paint the mirrors body color and I think that looks good, too.

For what it's worth, I had a local auto body supply store make me some spray cans of Volvo red (just gave them the paint code)that matches perfectly. I had to buy a quart can, but I think I got 6 spray cans and there is still enough left in the can to do a bunch of touch up. Not cheap, but the color match is worth it.

One thing that occures to me is that the bumper paint has to be somewhat flexible. I haven't consulted with the paint store, but I think you would be well advised to check to be sure that the paint you would use is suitable for bumpers. The bumpers expand and contract with temperature changes and that will cause cracks in the finished product.

Another hint....on my 740 wagon there are rubber strips between the fenders and the cowling in front of the windshield. A black Magic Marker works great to make them black again.......I'm just sayin'.

Good luck,
