If you use the vice-grips, might as well use two, clamp off both hoses, and replace the valve! FCPGroton has one that doesn't (I think) include the thermostat part, so you directly control the amount of hot water flowing through. Ask before you buy. Don't know for sure, but I think the OEM-style replacement is pretty spendy. Mine is pretty much the same, but at least I have the choice between on or off!
