Bungee cord did the trick (pics) 1800 1967

Hmmm, I know exactly what you mean in a 122 but the "boot" in this car is not rubber and I can't figure out how to remove it. I've never fooled with one of these M41s with the linkage yet. All the ones I've seen have the pudding stirrer shifter (122, 544 etc).
