If you'll use di-electric grease on the contacts when you're done cleaning them, it'll help things keep from getting bad again.
Another area to check is the ground from the circuit "board" to the body of the car. It is soldered to the "board" and has a ring connector bolted to the body via a 10mm bolt on the area of sheet metal between the bulb sockets.
I had the same issue with my 87 and it turned out to be a corroded connector @ the bolt. Since then, I've seen the same issue turn out to be nearly broken wire @ the connector and in one case a wire had been abraded on the edge of the sheet metal where it mounts, due to improper routing.
Good luck with your problem,
Frank
