generally, volvos don't have enough power to do this but it almost sounds like you broke a tooth on your Spider gears.
these are the small gears insde the Carrier. Usually if you are beating ther heck out of your car and spinning your tires you can break these. But generally you need more gusto then a Volvo engine has. Have you been spinning one rear tire a lot on Ice and then having it grab on dry pavement? That could do it.
Does it Hop or pop more when you are turning ? If you are driving straight does it happen less?
