The reason it can't be done is the shape of the hole. it is like an inverted T in cross section. Dirt gets in and won't let the stud base in anymore. No setting, no fastening, and you end up with a loose cannon of a tire.
When new they insert the studs with a special air tool which widens the stud hole, shoots the stud in then releases the hole, tightening the grip and locking the stud at its base.
My condolences about the Klebers if they are like those a buddy of mine had. A few years ago I was able to climb the hill to his house in two wheel drive with my Land Cruiser wearing Nokians while he was having trouble with his 4 Klebers in 4 wheel drive (otherwise exact same truck model and year, both our tires were new at the time, he had spent $500 and I, $750).
